Back-to-School Wardrobe: Five Lady Gaga Looks That’ll Send You Straight to Detention

Could Stefani Germanotta (stage name: Lady Gaga) go back in time to her first day of the 12th grade, we’re sure she’d plan an over-the-top entrance that would have landed her in a lot of trouble at her all-girls Catholic school. Gaga’s come a long way since her days at Convent of the Sacred Heart, and dresses a little differently now than she did back then. As a former classmate told the Daily Mail, “Stefani was a straight-A student who wore her skirt to her knee, as we were supposed to, and knee-high socks.”

From her giant egg arrival at the Grammys to her meat dress, these days Gaga’s clothes and costumes are meant to be titillating and conversation-starting. The singer has a preference for gravity-defying heels, catsuits, bondage-inspired garments, fur and dramatic dresses—basically, anything wildly impractical. We’ve noted some of her very favorite looks, and put together a sample back-to-school shopping list influenced by Ms. Germanotta. Try it at your own risk.

STRIPPER HEELS

Preferring heels because she’s “really short,” Gaga likes to shop at stores catering to strippers for her footwear. The appropriately-named online boutique Hot Stripper Shoes has many Gaga-esque styles, while Jeffrey Campbell‘s stilettos and heel-less options are another good (and pretty affordable) option. For those with unlimited budgets, Giuseppe Zanotti is one of Gaga’s favorite shoe designers.

A CATSUIT

Whether she’s performing or just going out to dinner, Gaga loves a catsuit—the more-revealing, the better. This item falls under the “impractical” and “titillating” categories. Get yours (and maybe save it for Halloween) at Ami Clubwear or Patricia Field.

A DRAMATIC DRESS

Occasionally, the singer likes to go out looking like a kooky old grand dame, or a fashionable alien. These outfits are usually marked by interesting headgear and a statement dress. For a little under four grand, Balmain‘s bright-red, shoulder-padded mini with a sparkly bird embroidered on the back and side is sexy and weird, the perfect Gaga combo. Topshop‘s got a peach, peplum dress that looks remarkable similar to a bright orange one Gaga wore out in June in New Zealand, and we think she’d appreciate the high-low hem and tight fit of this black Unif style.

Gaga’s a big proponent of the underwear-as-outerwear movement, and has been spotted walking the streets in a nothing but a few bits of sheer fabric topped with some sort of elaborate elastic harness. Hot Topic is a reliable resource for these sorts of getups, and right now has a pair of jeans that capture the bondage vibe without forcing you to flash anyone. Gaga’s own lingerie designer Stephanie Paterek operates a web store named NYC Sex Trash that, among other underpinnings, offers a black leather garter set. Finally, this Neil Barrett leather-accented dress is a sleek take on the look.

A TOUCH OF FUR

Whether its a faux or real, Lady Gag loves fur. So much so that she’s attracted the wrath of PETA. Since the actual stuff is hella expensive, we’ve tracked down three imitation options from Jones New York, Club Monaco and Michael Kors that, while still stylish, won’t get you doused in red paint.
