It’s hard to stay well-liked in the business side of the music industry, but it appears that Chris Lighty was not a man without friends. The legendary hip-hop manager, a critical figure in the genre’s development (especially on the East Coast), largely through the Violator label he founded, which helped make a star of 50 Cent and was at times home to the likes of Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and Ll Cool J.


He was found dead in his home in The Bronx, New York on Thursday morning, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot head wound, occurring in the midst of an argument with his ex-wife Veronica. He was 44 years old. Today, artists took to Twitter to express their grief over his passing:
