Better late than never, I guess. “Cockiness (Love It)” was always one of our favorite songs off Rihanna’s Talk That Talk, despite (because of?) the preponderance of awful double entendres, but after pulling five other Talk songs as singles, we figured the song was destined to languish as a deep cut. Nope—Ri’s actually gonna be leading off the VMAs with it. Well, actually, it’s going to be a medley of a “Cockiness” remix (featuring NY rapper A$AP Rocky) and her much-nominated smash “We Found Love”—which is even cooler, really. The performance will open the ceremonies, so that should be getting things off on a high note.
Later in the evening, Alicia Keys is rumored to be performing a new single of her own—a brand new song, in fact. Alicia leaked her own “Girl on Fire” today in two separate versions—an “Inferno” version that features Nicki Minaj and samples Billy Squire’s “The Big Beat” (previously heard in Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and Dizzee Rascal’s “Fix Up, Look Sharp”) and a “Blue Light” solo version that slows the song down to a ballad. MTV has strongly hinted that Alicia will be performing the new song at the ceremonies, and given how excited Nicki is for the Keys performance, we wouldn’t be surprised if she showed up for it too.
Truth told, we’re not all that sold on the new song just yet—the “Inferno” version seems a little too scattered, the “Blue Light” version a little too sparse—but we’ll wait for the seemingly inevitable VMA performance to really judge. See what you think in the meantime, courtesy of AliciaKeys.com:
