It was a pivotal moment in pop music history, when Madonna kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. In the moment, Madonna passed the torch (and also some saliva) to her two femme-pop successors, and Brit and Christina both took a step towards Dirrtydom they would not soon retreat from. But if Madonna had had her way, it would’ve been a very different moment, with a different co-star. MTV President Van Toffler discussed what could have been with Entertainment Weekly:
It was a long road to get to that Britney and Christina kiss, because they weren’t necessarily the first couple of people who were on the hit list. This may be the first time it’s revealed, but originally J. Lo was in the mix. That didn’t happen.
Jeez, can you imagine? Maybe if it had been J. Lo instead of Britney in that pivotal moment, it would’ve sent her on a spiral towards shaving her head, giving a zombie VMA comeback performance and marrying her former agent. At least this What If? seems to prove one thing about pop stars—no matter what you do and where your career goes, you end up a judge on reality TV eventually.
