Are We Really Doing This Now? Examining the Heavy Metal Hair Stud Trend

Don’t try this at home, or when attempting to clear security at the airport. A group of pop starlets, most notably Ke$ha, P!nk and Avril, have been showing up to events with hard metal affixed to their hair and/or skulls. Ke$ha’s been a big proponent of this, having shaved a section of her head in February and replaced the hair with glued-on gold studs; in her “We R Who We R” video, she affixed them to her eyebrows and her nails.

Last week, P!nk’s hairstylist Pamela Neal decorated her faux-hawk at the VMAs with a spiky metal headpiece which actually went quite nicely with her body-hugging silver dress. And in a pinch, the singer could have ripped it out to use it as a personal defense aid. Two birds, one stone. Neal’s no stranger to futuristic hair accessories, having collaborated with Katy Perry on her out-there “E.T.” video look.

That brings us to Avril. Yesterday, she made an appearance with newly-dyed pink and green hair decorated with a few small studs.

Nickelback’s newest superfan did the coloring herself in her hotel room, telling Us Weekly that she “just got dye happy and dyed my whole hair blond and then went crazy with these colors and studs.” In other off-the-rails Avril news, she’s said that she wants her next wedding dress to be “badass” and might even rip apart a few gowns to piece together her own creation. Oh, the halcyon days of Brody Jenner.
