This year’s Video Music Awards red carpet was the moment that the MTV-watching world realized that Miley Cyrus is starting to very closely resemble Pink, a singer 13 years her senior. It also was the public arena that Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa chose to announce that they are with child. But enough distractions, it’s time to talk about what everyone wore. We took note of six major trends—some easy to pull off, some less so. Let’s break it all down.
CROPPED HAIR
The newest members of this club, Rihanna and Miley, proudly sported shorter ‘dos complimented by dramatic floor-length gowns. Pregnant Amber Rose has grown out her buzz cut. And Pink was still rocking her go-to half-shaved style, which is now totally en vogue. Approach this look with caution: Like bangs, an above-the-shoulders crop is a serious commitment.
SHEER DETAILS
No one went completely nude, but slips of skin were common. Katy Perry’s elegant gown was sheer from mid-thigh down, Nicki Minaj’s booty-hugging jumpsuit went see-through at the very top and Rita Ora exposed a generous portion of her upper body. Miley complimented her futuristic hairstyle with a sexy paneled black dress and Ke$ha, your belly button was visible.
BRIGHT WHITE
Save for a few pops of red, the bright colors and bold prints of last year were mostly gone, replaced with a more neutral palette. Taylor Swift (opting for a pantsuit over her typical girly dresses), Rihanna and Rita Ora all looked stunning in solid white ensembles. White is a huge trend for fall. Guess it’s just about time to shelve neon.
METALLICS
Color might be out, but stars like Alicia Keys, Pink, Teen Wolf‘s Holland Roden and teensy Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas found another way to shine: metallics. This was a big trend at the Teen Choice Awards, too. In big or small doses, a shot of silver, gold or bronze definitely livens up an outfit. Right 2 Chainz?
TEXTURE
From Zoe Saladana’s fringy mini to Emma Watson’s expertly mis-matched knit top and skirt and Amber Rose’s lace-covered turtleneck dress, touchable fabrics had a moment last night.
RED LEATHER
Red leather might not be for everyone, but it certainly works for rock stars. Rihanna embraced this trend full force for during her VMA performance, while Pink chose red leather gloves to compliment her pin-up look. Tyga, we think, just stumbled into this trend roundup through luck or the talent of a stylist.
