It’s the first (real) day of the NFL season, an event that brings with it one of autumn’s most incongruous rituals: Bros recording their own football-themed remixes of tender pop songs. Every year we watch these, and every year we re-learn a few lessons.
1. There are more people than you would think who fall into the middle of the Venn diagram for football fans and listeners of Top 40 radio. This shouldn’t be that surprising, considering how both are defined by their incredible popularity, but since both are also famous for the religious intensity of their followings, being a fan of both seems almost polytheistic.
2. A lot of these dudes have really good voices!
Kicking off the trend this year is the Network of Champions, with their catchy ode to Tim Tebow, set to Maroon 5′s “Payphone”:
Cute, but will it have the zeitgeist-defining powers of “Hey There Trent Edwards,” which simply was 2009?
