Seconds after winning the VMA for Best Video with a Message—in a truly shocking, shocking upset over Rise Against and K’Naan—Demi took the stage in the pre-show to perform her second Unbroken hit, “Give Your Heart a Break.” The song, a slow-burner of a chart success, has grown on us significantly over the course of the year, and even if it doesn’t quite match the heights of “Skyscraper” (no pun intended), it’s a worthy song for a Demi victory lap such as her performance here.
The newly blonde X Factor judge did her song proud in the evening’s first performance, nailing her degree-of-difficulty high notes and giving the song an energy we wouldn’t really expect from such a mid-tempo ballad. Considering that the first performance we remember from last year was goofy Gabe Saporta pogoing around the red carpet to the mediocre “You Make Me Feel…,” it seems like 2012 is off to a much better start.
